Frequently asked Questions
Are your coins authentic?
Every coin is genuine and original to its stated period. No replicas, reproductions, or novelty items appear in this collection. The coins come from circulation, estate collections, and numismatic sourcing channels — each one verified before listing.
Are the coins cleaned or altered?
No. Coins are sold in their original circulated condition unless a listing explicitly states otherwise. Surfaces, patina, and toning are untouched. Cleaning and polishing damage both the value and the historical character of a coin — so it is never done here. What you see in the photographs is what you will receive.
What does "circulated" mean?
A circulated coin was used in everyday commerce — handed across counters, dropped into pockets, sorted into rolls, spent and received as change. The wear it carries is not damage. It is the physical record of the coin's life in use. Every scratch, every softened edge, every shift in tone happened because a human being held this object and then passed it on.
Most coins in this collection circulated for years or decades before being pulled from circulation and preserved. That history of use is part of what makes them worth holding.
How are coins graded?
Grades are conservative and use standard numismatic terminology: Good, Very Good, Fine, Very Fine, Extremely Fine, and About Uncirculated. Each listing includes specific condition notes describing the wear patterns, surface quality, and detail retention visible in the photographs.
If anything, expect the coin to look slightly better in hand than the grade suggests — not worse. Grading here errs on the side of understatement.
What do the grade abbreviations mean?
G (Good) — Heavy wear, major design elements visible but details are smooth. The coin saw heavy use over many years.
VG (Very Good) — Moderate to heavy wear with some detail beginning to emerge. Letters and major features are clear.
F (Fine) — Moderate wear with most design details visible. The coin saw regular circulation but retains its character.
VF (Very Fine) — Light to moderate wear on high points only. Most fine details remain sharp. A well-preserved circulated coin.
EF/XF (Extremely Fine) — Minimal wear on the highest points. Nearly all original detail is intact. The coin saw limited circulation.
AU (About Uncirculated) — Trace wear only, often visible as slight friction on the very highest points. Close to mint condition.
UNC (Uncirculated) — No wear from circulation. The coin retains its original mint surface and detail. Minor contact marks from storage or minting may be present, but the coin was never spent.
BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) — No wear from circulation, with original mint luster intact. The coin may show minor contact marks from storage or minting but was never spent. A step above UNC in visual appeal.
A plus sign (+) after a grade indicates the coin is at the stronger end of that range.
How are banknotes graded?
Banknotes use the same general terminology as coins, but the condition indicators are different. Where coin wear is measured by the loss of raised detail, banknote condition is measured by folds, creases, and paper integrity. Each fold in a banknote is a biographical event — evidence of the note being pocketed, counted, or handed across a counter.
G (Good) — Heavily handled with significant wear, possible small tears. The note has lived a hard life but remains intact.
VG (Very Good) — Heavy folds, noticeable soiling, some edge wear. The note is soft and pliable. A well-traveled survivor.
F (Fine) — Multiple folds and moderate handling. The paper has softened, edges may show minor wear, but the design remains complete and clear.
VF (Very Fine) — Several folds with some light soiling possible. Fold lines are visible but the paper retains firmness and all details are fully legible.
EF/XF (Extremely Fine) — Light handling with one or two minor folds. Paper retains body and color remains strong.
AU (About Uncirculated) — Virtually no wear. May have one light fold or faint handling evidence. Near-full crispness with sharp corners.
UNC (Uncirculated) — No folds, no handling marks, full original crispness. The note was never used in commerce.
Additional condition notes in banknote listings may reference pinholes (common in Asian and Middle Eastern notes from bank bundling — not damage), staple holes, foxing or age spots, margin integrity, and fold patterns such as center fold or tri-fold.
Will I receive the exact coin shown in the photos?
For single-coin listings: yes, the exact coin photographed. For listings with multiple coins available: one coin of the same date, type, and comparable condition, selected individually. Listings always specify which applies.
Every coin is photographed on both sides with accurate lighting. No filters, no color enhancement, no digital cleanup.
Where do the coins come from?
From circulation, estate collections, collector dispersals, and direct numismatic sourcing built over years of collecting. Every coin passes through individual evaluation before being photographed, graded, and listed.
Do you sell coin lots or bulk sets?
No. Every coin is listed individually with its own photographs, its own condition notes, and its own historical context. This is what separates the collection from bulk or lot sellers. A buyer is selecting a specific coin with a specific story — not receiving a random assortment.
What are the descriptions in each listing?
Every listing includes the history of the era a coin circulated in — what was happening in the world, what ordinary people were doing with their money, and what daily life looked like at the time. Listings also include a sensory description of the coin itself, detailed specifications (weight, diameter, composition, mintage), collector context, and condition notes.
The listings are written to be read, not skimmed. They are designed so that the coin makes sense on its own terms — whether someone is an experienced collector or holding a historic coin for the first time.
Do coins work as gifts?
They do — particularly birth-year coins, where the coin comes from the same year as the recipient. A coin from 1974 carries fifty-two years of history, and the listing tells the story of what the world looked like the year it was struck. The recipient does not need to be a collector for that to land. The coin arrives with its own story already attached. No explanation needed.
Heritage coins work the same way — a coin from the country a family came from, struck in the decade a grandparent emigrated. That kind of gift connects a person to a place and a moment without requiring a word of context from the giver.
Can I find a coin from a specific year or country?
The collection spans three centuries and includes coins from dozens of countries. Browse by era or by country to find what you are looking for. New coins are added regularly as inventory is sourced and processed.
I am new to coin collecting. Is this accessible?
Yes. The listings are written to be read by anyone — not just experienced collectors. Historical context, condition details, and specifications are included in every listing so that the coin makes sense on its own terms, whether it is someone's first purchase or their five hundredth.
There is no background knowledge required. If you can read the listing, you know everything you need to know about the coin.
How do I start a collection?
With one coin. Any coin. The country you were born in, the year you were born, a war you read about, a place you visited once. There is no wrong entry point and no required sequence. Most collectors will tell you their collection started with a single coin that made them curious about a second one. The rest followed on its own.
How are coins packaged?
Carefully packaged for safe transit. Coins are secured to prevent movement and protected against bending, moisture, and impact during shipping. Tracking is included with every order.
How long does shipping take?
Domestic orders within the United States typically arrive within 3 to 7 business days. Canadian orders may take 7 to 14 business days depending on customs processing. Australian and New Zealand orders may take 10 to 21 business days depending on customs processing. Tracking is provided for all shipments.
What is your return policy?
All sales are final. Every coin is photographed in accurate lighting on both sides, graded conservatively, and described in detail so that the coin can be fully evaluated before purchase. What you see in the listing is what you will receive.
Is this shop connected to Etsy?
WadesCoinShop also maintains a presence on Etsy, where the collection has been built over time with a record of five-star reviews from collectors. This Shopify store offers the same coins, the same descriptions, the same grading standards, and the same voice. The difference is the browsing experience — this site is organized into collections by era, country, and type in ways that Etsy's platform does not support.
